My thoughts, the way I learn and store information, and even the

way I put thoughts into words, are all image-based. I’m dyslexic.

I’m hardwired this way. If I’m unable to visualize it or draw it,

I can’t understand it—it’s gone.



I grew up in England in my parents’ pub just outside of London,

kicking a football on the grounds of Dickensian schools where

you were ‘caned’ or ‘got the slipper’. The way I learned was not

the way they wanted me to learn. The exception was an art teacher

who changed my life. I went on to university and completed an

art and design degree. I loved it. I belonged.


 
I eventually moved to Australia. There I encountered a vastly

different landscape and discovered that ‘place’ inspired the way

I imagine and make images.



I’ve spent 25 years teaching drawing, illustration and design at

various universities in England and Australia. Teaching has been

fundamental to my learning—clarifying as well as challenging

what I believe, underlining the importance of process in developing

work, and providing the opportunity to practice, practice, practice

both the physical and conceptual side of image-making.



During this time I contributed to a number of group exhibitions.

I began painting full-time in 2006. I’m now living on a lake

in Wisconsin’s northwoods.
